The London Technology Fund includes the following sectors in its definition of technology. Where possible, these are consistent with the BVCA classifications.
- Communications
For example:
Telecommunications: hardware - voice and data communications equipment, cable/mobile/satellite network equipment
Telecommunications: carriers - cable/mobile/satellite telecoms carriers - Computer (hardware, semiconductors and software)
For example:
Computer: hardware - computer mainframes, laptops, minicomputers, PDA/hand-held devices, optical scanning equipment, voice synthesis/recognition systems
Computer: semiconductors - semiconductors, electronic components (e.g., integrated circuits, transistors), semiconductor fabrication equipment
Computer: services -data processing, hardware maintenance, IT consulting, IT training
Computer: software - application software products, operating systems and systems related software for all types of hardware, systems integration, and software development - Internet technology
For example:
Browsers, portals, search engines and other internet enabling technology, website design/consultancy, ISPs - Other electronics related
For example:
Electronics - batteries, power supplies, fibre optics, analytical and scientific instrumentation - Biotechnology
For example:
Agricultural/animal biotechnology (e.g., plant diagnostics), industrial biotechnology (e.g., derived chemicals), biotechnology related research and production equipment - Medical (instruments, pharmaceuticals and healthcare)
For example:
Medical: healthcare - health institutions, hospital management, handicap aids & basic healthcare supplies
Medical: instruments/devices - technologically advanced diagnostic & therapeutic products and services
Medical: pharmaceutical - drug development, manufacture & supply.
Please note that the London Technology Fund is restricted to a maximum investment of £1.5m in any one company, over a series of tranches. This means that it is not able to invest in companies that have very much larger capital requirements such as start-ups whose main activity is drug development. - Emerging technologies
For example:
Nanotechnology, doped semiconductors devices - Energy
For example:
Exploration and drilling services & equipment, energy conservation related, alternative energy - Environment
For example:
Industrial products and services - pollution and recycling related - Physical sciences and engineering
For example:
Chemicals & materials - commodity chemicals, speciality or performance chemicals/materials, coatings and adhesives, membranes and membrane-based products
Industrial automation - industrial measurement and sensing equipment, process control equipment, robotics, machine vision systems, numeric and computerised control of machine tools
Industrial products and services - industrial equipment & machinery - New materials
For example:
Materials for application in the home security sector (e.g., anti-blast); materials resulting in replacement of existing components to improve emissions, efficiency and productivity - Value added manufacturing
For example:
Technology-based enhancements to manufacturing processes in various sectors
